Standard Deductions:
- Single or Married Filing Separately (MFS): $16,100
- Married Filing Joint (MFJ) or Qualifying Surviving Spouse: $32,200
- Head of Household (HOH): $24,150
Taxpayers who are 65 or older or blind are eligible for an additional standard deduction amount, per qualifying condition.
- Additional standard deduction: An extra $2,000 per qualifying person for Single or HOH filers, or $1,600 per qualifying person for MFJ, MFS, or Qualifying Surviving Spouse filers.
- New senior bonus deduction (2025-2028): An additional $6,000 per qualifying person (age 65+) is available for both itemizers and non-itemizers, subject to modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) phaseout thresholds.
- The bonus deduction starts to phase out for single filers with MAGI over $75,000 and for joint filers with MAGI over $150,000
Standard Deduction for Dependents If you can be claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, your 2024 standard deduction is limited to the greater of:
- $1,350, or
- Your earned income plus $450 (but the total cannot exceed the basic standard deduction for your filing status).
